Dense, full-coloured with dark fruits, perfumed florals and damp earth on the nose. Smooth and round, the wine is medium-bodied with flavours mirroring the nose, along with some attractive mocha, dark chocolate notes and a bit of wood smoke and spice in the finish. A versatile everyday Merlot that doesn’t exactly have distinguishing features but is enjoyable nevertheless.

Merlot is said to add softness and luscious fruit flavours to a blend, but as the US discovered a century later – it is actually delicious on its own.
2019 merlot varietals will be available later this year.
Merlot can be traced back to the eighteenth century when a French winemaker in the Bordeaux region of France used the grape in his now world-famous ‘Bordeaux blend’, along with Cabernet Sauvignon.
New Zealand’s cooler climate and long ripening season allows the grape to grow slowly and therefore concentrate its flavours.
Red fruits and a smooth finish are the popular characteristics of Merlot.
